Permission to Pause: On Shifting Priorities and Full-Circle Moments
Permission to Pause: On Shifting Priorities and Full-Circle Moments
Look closely at nature, and you’ll quickly notice that nothing blooms year-round. Trees shed their leaves, soil rests beneath winter frost, and ecosystems shift to sustain long-term life.
Yet, as high achievers, we often expect ourselves to operate like machines. We demand 100% consistency across every platform, routine, project, and social channel—without ever granting ourselves permission to reallocate our energy.
If you’ve noticed a quiet stretch on my social media recently, even while I've kept up with these weekly reflections, it wasn’t because I stepped away from Elevate Mind N Motion. It was because life called for an intentional shift in where my daily focus went.
A Full-Circle Season
Alongside caring for my clients and growing my practice, I recently stepped into a new role as Adjunct Faculty at Arizona State University, teaching across both the undergraduate and graduate social work programs.
When I first entered my degree program years ago, social work felt like the most direct path to becoming a clinical therapist. But along the way, I fell deeply in love with the true heart of social work: advocacy, connection, and community care that expands far beyond the four walls of a single therapy room.
To return to my alma mater—stepping into classrooms on the very campus where my own clinical foundation was built—is a profound, full-circle privilege. Getting to mentor the next generation of social workers, from students taking their foundational practice courses to graduate students preparing for advanced practice, has been immensely fulfilling.
Releasing the Trap of All-or-Nothing Consistency
Balancing a clinical practice and university teaching has required me to practice the exact principles I hold space for in therapy. It has forced me to confront a common, subtle trap: the belief that if we aren't maintaining 100% output in every single area, we are somehow falling behind.
When time and energy became finite, I chose to protect what was essential—my clients, my students, and long-form writing—while letting social media posting take a back seat.
Here is what I want to offer you this week:
Priorities are meant to shift. You do not have to perform at peak capacity in every corner of your life simultaneously. Moving energy toward a new goal or responsibility naturally means taking a step back in another.
Taking a break is self-advocacy, not failure. Hitting pause on one channel or task isn't "giving up"—it's pacing yourself so you can show up fully where it matters most right now.
Imperfection sustains longevity. Pushing through fatigue to maintain an arbitrary standard of total consistency is a quick route to burnout. Giving yourself breathing room during seasons of transition allows you to stay grounded for the long haul.
A Reflection to Carry With You
As seasons shift, take a moment to gently audit where your energy is going.
Ask yourself:
Where am I expecting total consistency across the board when a shift in priority is actually needed?
What is one area where I can grant myself permission to hit pause this week without feeling guilty?
We don't have to carry everything at once to be moving forward. Sometimes, honoring your growth simply means allowing room for the season you're in.
With care,
